The Mercenaries Arrive
The Province of Leinster have decided to move forward in their plans for war against the Province of Ulster. The first issue in their plans was to determine where to quickly gain a foothold in Ulster. A group of mercenaries was selected for part of this task; an elven warrior, a intellectually deficient half-orc brute named Berf, a human rogue with a whip, a frozen dwarven bard named Iggaloak (Iggy for short), and a barbaric elf befriended by the dwarf named Bloodknuckle were purchased by the army. This motley group was unlike other groups in the Leinsterian army and would hopefully go undetected in Ulster.
They met with Commander Lorn and were told that their first mission was to investigate a port city called Saltmarsh, and to report back within two weeks. They would be given horses and food for the journey, and would be rewarded when they returned. The dwarf opted for a cart instead of the horse. Commander Lorn gave informed them that they would be off in the morning, and bid them a good evening.
Saltmarsh, the City of The Fallen Warriors
The trip to Saltmarsh was quick; two days passed before the group entered the city of Saltmarsh. As they fanned out, the elven warrior and the rogue started to quickly assess the city's defenses. Berf decided to do so as well, and spent most of his time search for large brick buildings, and a lot more time attempting to count how many people would fit inside one of the barracks.
It was during this initial looking around that the elven warrior talked Berf into a plan, deciding that the best way to get information about the city would be to kidnap one of the guards. Since the guards traveled in groups of two for safety, two were led out into the forest around the city under the lie of a person in distress. Bloodknuckle saw her two companions leading guards toward her, and just decided to wash her hands of this situation, walking off. Berf and the elf quickly dispatched the two guards. Unfortunately, one guard was killed during the scuffle, and the other died while the elf went to enlist the help of the dwarven bard whose skills also fell into that of the clergy.
The next day, Bloodknuckle and Iggy put on a wonderful performance in Saltmarsh, and attracted the attention of a local nobleman, Theodore Jaril. He talked them into performing at his child's birthday party in a few days. Iggy continued to be slightly more quiet about the information that he was trying to learn, and the fact that he was the biggest act the city had seen in a long time really paid off.
The elven warrior and the human rogue tried a bit more direct approach to finding information. Using the cart and the armor from the guards, they attempted to find out more information about the warehouses by delivering a crop of fruit. They were nearly caught as their papers were sent off to the guard post that they supposedly were stationed too, but the man apparently brushed them off as pranksters.
Over the next twenty four hours, more about the city itself is learned. Saltmarsh is the result of a group of warriors clearing out a large infestation of goblins and orcs. The final climactic battle that turned the area around Saltmarsh from uncivilized rebellion and tribal infighting into a proper place to live left two of the adventurers dead. A shrine was erected to remember the heroes, but the location of the Shrine has been lost to history.
The group has only been in town for three days. Two guards are dead, and two of mercenaries are already well known due to their musical talents. Two more have come very, very close to being arrested. Berf still isn't sure what's going on.
Eleven days are left before they must report back to Commander Lorn. Will Saltmarsh be the city that gets invaded first?
The Saltmarsh Song, by Iggaloak Astymizilian
In times long past
in an age beyond knowing
Four heroes brave
faced a horde downward flowing
With blade and steel
and spells swift flying
the Orcs did fall
with curses dying
The horde closed in
in hungry waves
and one by one
they found their graves
The earth ran red
with rivers winding
as blood stained stone
'tween tree roots' binding
The dust now settles
the battle won
the heroes brave
stand backs to sun
Tears run free
as heroes take score
Uuko lies dead
to sing deeds no more
A cry rings out
as Nizar falls
Her hands grow cold
No more magic calls
A camp is born
on battle's ground
and slowly grows
to budding town
Antonius and Kimble
who's fate's known well
dedicate the town
to those brave who fell
Salt Marsh flourishes
in lore and power
as town's made great
in remembered valor
In the Salty Mug
we raise our glass
to toast the brave
who secured the pass
A toast to the brave
who secured the pass!
What is 'Nations Collide'?
Nations Collide is the name for my new D&D campaign that kicked off a few weeks ago. It will chronicle the struggle of two nations from the moment that war was becoming a very real probability to the very end.
What is all of this?
I've decided to chronicle our D&D sessions through my blog. This way the antics and heroics of the characters will be available for all to read and comment about, plus it makes me post on my blog. Mostly to showcase the characters though.
When should there be updates?
Normally a few days after Sunday each week that we meet. I want to get it up the Monday night after we game, but depending on my work schedule and other factors.
